NAKED SPACE

SOLAR INDEX is a site-specific climate shelter developed for the terrace of Santa Mònica in Barcelona. The installation uses a suspended textile structure to negotiate between direct sunlight and the bodies beneath it, transforming an exposed rooftop into a temporary environment for shade, rest, and gathering.

Rather than treating climate as an abstract subject, the project works directly with its physical conditions. As the sun moves throughout the day, shadows shift across the terrace, continuously redrawing the boundaries between protection and exposure. The installation becomes a simple spatial index: one read through light, temperature, time, and the changing occupation of the space.

The work considers climate shelter not only as functional infrastructure, but as a social condition. Shade becomes something shared — a temporary commons where bodies gather according to environmental necessity rather than prescribed programming. Sitting, waiting, resting, and encountering others become part of the work itself.

In dialogue with Santa Mònica’s curatorial framework, SOLAR INDEX also questions how environmental reality is perceived and mediated. Instead of representing climate through images or data, the project allows the surrounding environment to act directly upon the architecture and its occupation.

SOLAR INDEX continues NAKED SPACE’s research into temporary structures and collective spatial experience, asking how minimal architectural gestures can make the conditions already surrounding us more tangible.
